A Good Time to Write an Entry

For the past few months, I've had plenty of ideas or events to write about. But perhaps I am lazy. And I shouldn't forget that this website isn't necessarily for you, the reader, as much as it is for me. I enjoy coming back and reading my own stuff, and being lazy deprives me of that. But if ever there were a time to write an entry, today would be the time.

The Romano Saga Continues

[Sigh...]
Romano has learned a new habit. And, as usual, I am intrigued with his cleverness. However, his intelligence usually only causes big messes.
What now, you say? Well, it seems that Romano has learned to turn on the RO water faucet. Not too bad, right? Wrong. He also knows how to swivel the faucet so it sprays all over the kitchen counter. He's so stealthy about it, too -- hes turned it on a few times while we've been home. We only discover it when walking through the large puddle in the kitchen floor. DAMMIT!
Now, why can't he learn to bring me a beer or cut up a pineapple for Jessica? Somehow, he uses his gifted mind to issue absolute mayhem. I admire his abilities, but I really want to choke him.

Happy Grill Day! Er, I mean, birthday!

Yes, 'tis true -- ol' Matthew had to wait exactly 25 years before he got his very own barbecue grill. Jessica and my mom were in cahoots together, and what a fine job they did! My brother and his chick gave me a set of "tools" to prevent me from having to turn over steaks and flip burger patties with my bear hands. Sam had unknowingly given me a gift already by allowing me to cook with his grill when I visit. I really didn't think such a fine item would be in my future, but I was certainly surprised. We've already broken it in with steaks (Steve, I owe you) and asian-glazed chicken wings. But the other night, Jessica and I enjoyed a pair of cedar-planked salmon, complete with my own balsamic glaze. I was trying to duplicate what is served at Johnny Carino's, but Google was no help. I finally found a couple of basic recipes and took a wild guess as to what needed to happen to make the final dish turn out like we wanted. Oh, damn, those salmon were so good, I forgot what it taste like at Carino's. So, if you ever get a craving for salmon, and you own a grill, let me know and I'll give you my recipe!

Many of you know I'm a huge fan of SourceMage GNU/Linux; I've been using it for a few years now, both for my desktop and my servers. It's not really for the novice, as a lot of what it takes to get it running requires fairly decent knowledge of UNIX systems in general. I like it for it's configurability: you can setup a base system and configure it to do exactly what you want it do do without any extra cruft. And all of that is compiled against your architecture. Can't get any more optimized that that!

A Year Already

Tomorrow, Jessica and I share our one-year anniversary. To both of us, our first year together has passed very quickly, with memories of our first encounters still fresh on our minds. I sent flowers to her office, but no one else was there to see them. She was pleasantly surprised, of course. I really like sending her flowers! I had no expectations of receiving a gift -- never crossed my mind. But she was grinning ear-to-ear as I unwrapped my Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, and I was stunned to have been in receipt of such a gift! Her gift was not merely a book, but a source of motivation for me to continue with my studies. Its investments like these that shows me just how much she really cares about me. I love my Jessica, and I look forward to another year with her.

But for those of you who don't recognize it, you may be asking, "What's the difference?" Well, the site you've been used to was using the Drupal content management engine -- something that I did not create. The site you see this very moment is one I engineered by hand.

Still Not Too Old for First Times

Jessica had been excited about going to the South Plains Fair in Lubbock for more than a month in advance. Her face would light up whenever she'd tell me about all the great things there were to eat. I'm smiling now as I think of her...Anyway, this past weekend was my first time to go to a Fair. We did all the classic things, starting with looking at the various things that were entered in contests -- drawings from school kiddos and baked goods from every grandma in town. It was about lunch time, so we got her a 1-foot corndog and I a bar-b-rito, which was a tortilla with brisket. As simple as those things sound, they were mighty delicious. While we walked around the grounds, keeping from making eye-contact with the carnies, we happened upon the classic game where you swing a large hammer in order to hit the bell at the top. I got three swings, and nailed that bell on two of them. Jessica got to pick a prize! As corny or old fashioned as that may sound, it sure was fun to win a toy for my girl!We rode the ferris wheel and smootch at the top, of course. And then she helped me find a carmel apple, which was the first time I'd ever had one. Not bad! She wanted a funnel cacke, and we got a second to bring home to mom.Not much to the whole ordeal, especially since it was mad expensive to do much of anything. But we got to do a few classic things, and I'm sure happy to have the memories.
